The Effects of Tourniquet Application in Total Knee Arthroplasty on the Recovery of Thigh Muscle Strength and Clinical Outcomes.
J Knee Surg. 2021 Aug;34(10): 1057-1063.Seventy patients who were undergoing TKA were randomized to receive an intraoperative thigh tourniquet (n=35) or no tourniquet (n=35). The primary outcome of interest was thigh muscle strength postoperatively. Secondary outcomes of interest included clinical outcomes measured by the Knee Society Score (KSS), pain scores and knee range of motion (ROM). There was no significant differences in quadriceps or hamstring muscle strength at 1 or 3 months postoperatively between the two groups. There was no difference in KSS scores, pain scores or knee ROM at 1 or 3 months between the two groups.
