The effect of weekly risedronate on periprosthetic bone resorption following total hip arthroplasty: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2011 Oct 19;93(20):1857-64. doi: 10.2106/JBJS.J.0164673 patients were randomized to determine the effect of a bisphosphonate therapy on bone mineral density (BMD) of the periprosthetic regions following total hip arthroplasty (THA). Patients received either risedronate or a placebo once a week for 6 months, and were followed-up for 24 months postoperatively. Results indicated that bone resorption in the periprosthetic regions was reduced with risedronate for up to a year, and that clinical, radiographic, and adverse-event outcomes were unaffected.
