This study recommends for clinicians to exercise caution when considering surgical treatment in the form of APM for patients with degenerative meniscus tears, because APM may not offer significant advantages with respect to knee pain, overall knee function and health-related quality of life compared to conservative or exercise treatments. In addition, the study did not successfully identify a relevant subgroup of patients who may benefit from APM. Of note, one limitation of the study includes missing individual participant data in half the studies that were analyzed, which may impact the generalizability of these findings.

This systematic review and meta-analysis included a total of four studies with 605 patients exhibiting degenerative meniscus tears and compares surgical treatment (Arthroscopic Partial Meniscectomy; APM) with non-surgical or sham treatment. Pooled outcomes of interest included knee pain, overall knee function, health-related quality of life, and mental health scores. The pooled results of this analysis showed a small improvement in knee pain at 24 months follow-up for the APM group compared to the non-surgical or sham treatment group. However, there were no significant differences in overall knee function clinically, health-related quality of life, or mental health scores between the two groups.
