Surgical Management of Pes Planovalgus with Talo-Calcaneal Coalition in Adolescents .

Coalition excision and corrective osteotomies versus coalition excision and arthroereisis in management of pes planovalgus with talo-calcaneal coalition in adolescents: A randomized controlled trial.

Foot Ankle Surg . 2023 Aug;29(6):466-474.

Thirty feet in 28 patients with rigid flat foot due to talocalcaneal coalition were randomized to receive either coalition excision and corrective osteotomies (n=15) or coalition excision and arthroereisis (n=15). The primary outcome of interest was the degree of deformity correction, while secondary outcomes included patient satisfaction, complication rate, and functional assessments using the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society’s Ankle-Hind foot scale (AOFAS-AHS), Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM), and Foot and Ankle Disability Index (FADI). Outcomes were assessed over a mean follow-up duration of 24 months. Overall, the results of the study revealed comparable improvements in functional and radiological outcomes as well as foot alignment, between the two interventions. This means that both coalition excision with corrective osteotomies and arthroereisis are viable options for managing patients with rigid pes planovalgus with talocalcaneal coalition.
