Proximal femoral nail vs. dynamic hip screw in treatment of intertrochanteric fractures: a meta-analysis

Six prospective studies were included in this meta-analysis investigating the efficacy of proximal femoral nails (PFN) and dynamic hip screws (DHS) in the fixation of intertrochanteric fractures. Meta-analysis was performed of data on operative time, intraoperative blood loss, incision length, infection rate, lag screw cut-out rate, and reoperation rate. Results demonstrated shorter operative time, reduced blood loss, and shorter incision length with proximal femoral nails. There was no significant difference between proximal femoral nails and dynamic screws in the rate of infection, screw cut-out, or reoperation.
