Intramedullary nailing via suprapatellar approach versus locked plating of proximal extra-articular tibial fractures: a randomized control trial

Three hundred and twenty eight patients with proximal extra-articular tibia fractures were randomized to receive operative fixation with a suprapatellar intramedullary nail (IMN) or percutaneous locking compression plate (LCP). The primary outcome of interest was the Iowa Knee Score at 12 months postoperatively. Secondary outcomes of interest were perioperative outcomes, rate of fracture healing and postoperative complications. No significant differences in the Iowa Knee Score were found between groups at 12 months postoperatively. The LCP group had a significantly higher rate of hardware removal at 12 months compared to the IMN group (p<0.001). No differences in perioperative outcomes or other postoperative complications were noted.
