A pilot, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to assess the safety and efficacy of a novel Boswellia serrata extract in the management of osteoarthritis of the knee

48 patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to daily oral supplementation with either Boswellia serrata extract or placebo. Patients were followed over 4 months of treatment for outcome related to pain and function. After 4 months, results demonstrated significantly greater improvement in the BSE group for the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, visual analog pain scores, Patient's Global Assessment of pain, and 6-minute walk test distances.
