Prospective randomized comparison of ultrasonography-guided and blind corticosteroid injection for de Quervain's disease.

Forty-four patients (48 wrists) with De Quervain's disease were randomized to receive an ultrasound-guided or blind corticosteroid injection (0.5 mL of 40mg/mL triamcinolone acetonide). Outcomes of interest included pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) pain, functional, and total scores, the incidence of skin hypopigmentation/atrophy, hypopigmentation score on the modified Vancouver Scar Scale (MVSS), and the incidence of recurrence. Outcomes were assessed at 4 weeks and 3 months post-injection. No significant differences in all outcomes were observed between the two treatment arms, at both time-points. The rate of recurrence was 10% in the ultrasound group compared to 26.3% in the blinded group.
