Efficacy of single high-molecular-weight versus triple low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid intra-articular injection among knee osteoarthritis patients.
BMC Musculoskelet Disord. 2020; 21: 550Ninety patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) were randomized into receiving a single cross-linked high-molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HMWHA) or three injections of low-molecular weight hyaluronic acid (LMWHA). The outcomes of interest included pain was measured through using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and function was evaluated using the Lequesne and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) scores. Outcomes were assessed at 2 and 6 months follow-up. The results demonstrated no significant differences between the 2 groups for all outcomes at all time points, with the exception of the improvement from baseline in WOMAC stiffness at 2 months follow-up, which was significantly in favour of the LMWHA group.
