Lateral elbow tendinopathy: surgery versus extracorporeal shock wave therapy

Twenty nine patients with lateral elbow tendinopathy were randomized to receive extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) (n=14) or surgical common extensor release (n=15). The primary outcome of interest was patient reported outcomes as evaluated by the Verhaar criteria. Secondary outcomes included patient satisfaction and mean improvement. There was no significant difference in the proportion of patients who achieved an 'excellent' or 'good' score on the Verhaar criteria at 3 and 12 months postoperatively. Similarly, there was no difference in the mean improvement on the Verhaar criteria or patient satisfaction at 12 months post procedure.
