Comparison of quadriceps-sparing minimally invasive and medial parapatellar total knee arthroplasty: A 2-year follow-up study
J Formos Med Assoc. 2012 Dec;111(12):698-704. doi: 10.1016/j.jfma.2011.11.025. Epub 2012 Apr 3060 patients (80 knees) undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomised into two groups to either undergo the procedure using the quadriceps-sparing approach or the standard medial parapatellar approach. The patients were assessed 2 months and 2 years following the operation. Both groups had similar outcomes for quadriceps muscle strength, hamstring-quadriceps balance, and knee function. However, the quadriceps-sparing TKA procedure had a longer operation time than the standard medial parapatellar approach. Moreover, the quadriceps-sparing TKA approach resulted in less precise prosthesis position.
