Aspirin versus enoxaparin for the initial prevention of venous thromboembolism following elective arthroplasty of the hip or knee: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Four randomized controlled trials including 1507 adult patients with osteoarthritis (OA) undergoing an elective hip or knee arthroplasty were included in this meta-analysis comparing the use of aspirin to enoxaparin after surgery for thromboprophylaxis. The primary outcomes of interest included incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and mortality, which were evaluated up to 3-months post-surgery. Secondary outcomes of interest included the incidence of major bleeding events (i.e. re-operation due to organ, limb or muscle function compromise) and minor bleeding events (i.e. infection, wound ooze/minor bleed). Pooled results revealed that no statistical significant difference were observed for all primary and secondary outcomes (p>0.05 for all).
