SICOT 2023: Safety & Efficacy of Unilateral Instrumented Fusion for Degeneration Lumbar Disease .
Safety & Efficacy of Unilateral Instrumented Fusion in Two-Level Degenerative Lumbar Disease
Five randomized controlled trials (215 patients) comparing unilateral pedicle screw fixation with bilateral pedicle screw fixation for multi-level lumbar degenerative disorders were included in this meta-analysis. Outcomes of interest included fusion rates, complication rates, blood loss, length of hospital stay, and function on the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Unilateral pedicle screw fixation showed a significant reduction in operative time. There were no significant differences between the bilateral and unilateral pedicle screw fixation groups with regard to fusion rates, blood loss, complication rates, duration of hospital stay, VAS, ODI, and SF-36.
