Effect of shed blood retransfusion on pulmonary perfusion after total knee arthroplasty: a prospective controlled study
Int Orthop. 2007 Dec;31(6):837-44. Epub 2006 Nov 432 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomised to one of two groups for either postoperative shed blood (autologous) transfusion or a homologous transfusion (control group). The intervention group had 15 unilateral and 1 bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with autotransfusion, and the control group had 15 unilateral and 3 bilateral TKAs. Results indicated that retansfusion of postoperatively shed blood does not add risk to pulmonary perfusion.
