Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2: A randomized trial in open tibial fractures treated with reamed nail fixation.

J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2011 May 4;93(9):801-8. Epub 2011 Mar 31.

277 patients with an open tibial shaft fracture were randomized to either receive the standard of care or to the treatment group, which received the standard of care plus implantation of a collagen sponge containing 12 mg of Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2). This study failed to detect any substantial benefit of the BMP treatment in accelerating fracture union in open tibial fractures treated with reamed intramedullary nail fixation.
