A prospective randomized study comparing retractor-endoscopic vs. open release of carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndromes
Clin Neurol Neurosurg. 2022 Nov;222: 107437.Eighty patients with carpal tunnel (n=40) or cubital tunnel syndrome (n=40) were randomized to receive a retractor-endoscopic nerve decompression (n=47) or an open decompression (n=33). Outcomes of interest included operative time, McGowan score, neurophysiological data, Bishop Rating Scores (BRS), time to full functionality and duration of pain, the incidence of adverse events, and complications. The results found that for carpal tunnel syndrome patients, retractor-endoscopy release resulted in a shorter operative time, duration of pain and time to full function return, superior BRS scores, and less discomfort vs. open surgery. For cubital tunnel syndrome patients, no differences in outcomes were observed.
