Effect of remifentanil on post-operative analgesic consumption in patients undergoing shoulder arthroplasty after interscalene brachial plexus block: a randomized controlled trial

Sixty-eight patients undergoing arthroscopic repair for rotator cuff tears with an interscalene brachial plexus block were randomized to receive either remifentanil intraoperatively (n=34) or no analgesics intraoperatively (n=34). The primary outcome of this trial was the dose of fentanyl-nefopam IV-PCA postoperatively over 24 hours. Secondary outcomes such as the amount of rescue analgesics, total morphine milligram equivalents, attempted PCA bolus, and pain scores were assessed. Significantly lower fentanyl and nefopam consumption along with PCA bolus attempts and total analgesics consumption were reported in the control group postoperatively as compared to the remifentanil group.
