Broad Arm Sling vs Figure of 8 Bandage: The Better Choice in Conservative Management of Middle Third Clavicle Fractures in Indian Population
Indian J Orthop . 2022 Jun 11;56(8):1394-1402.Two hundred and ninety-six patients with middle-third clavicular fractures were randomized to receive either a figure 8 bandage (n=152) or a broad-arm sling (n=144). Outcomes that were assessed were function, radiological outcomes, and pain scores. Shoulder function was assessed using the Disability of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH), Constant score, and Nottingham Clavicle Score. Pain was measured using the 10mm Visual Analog Score (VAS). Significant differences in pain scores at 1 and 4 weeks were apparent with better scores in the figure 8 bandage group and broad arm sling group, respectively. The number of patients who developed malunion after 2 years was significantly lower in the broad-arm sling group.
