The effect of midazolam on pain control after knee arthroscopy: a systematic review and meta-analysis
J Orthop Surg Res. 2017 Nov 21;12(1):179.Six randomized controlled trials containing 280 patients undergoing knee arthroscopy were included in this meta-analysis comparing midazolam (n=140) and control (n=140) for the relief of post-operative pain. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain scores post-operation, time to first analgesic requirement, number of patients requiring analgesics, analgesic consumption post-operation, and the risk of adverse events. Results of the meta-analysis revealed statistically significantly lower pooled pain scores (p=0.02), longer time to first analgesic requirement (p=0.03), lower number of patients requiring analgesics (p=0.005), and lower analgesic consumption (p=0.03) in favour of the midazolam group. No statistical significant difference was observed in the pooled risk of adverse events (p=0.67).
