The effect of midazolam on pain control after knee arthroscopy: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Results of this meta-analysis suggest that midazolam may effectively reduce post-operative pain, analgesic consumption, and the time to analgesic consumption in patients undergoing knee arthroscopy, without any significant increase in the risk of adverse events. This study was limited by the small number of included studies (6 RCTs), as well as the variation in doses and administration method of midazolam, which prevents drawing any definitive conclusions regarding the optimal treatment protocol. Future studies to establish an optimal treatment regimen are required.

Six randomized controlled trials containing 280 patients undergoing knee arthroscopy were included in this meta-analysis comparing midazolam (n=140) and control (n=140) for the relief of post-operative pain. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain scores post-operation, time to first analgesic requirement, number of patients requiring analgesics, analgesic consumption post-operation, and the risk of adverse events. Results of the meta-analysis revealed statistically significantly lower pooled pain scores (p=0.02), longer time to first analgesic requirement (p=0.03), lower number of patients requiring analgesics (p=0.005), and lower analgesic consumption (p=0.03) in favour of the midazolam group. No statistical significant difference was observed in the pooled risk of adverse events (p=0.67).
