The effect of pre-operative carbohydrate loading in femur fracture: a randomized controlled trial

Sixty-six patients who were undergoing surgery for femur fractures were randomized to receive either loaded carbohydrates (n=33) preoperatively or were asked to fast (n=33) prior to their surgery. Outcomes of interest in this trial were postoperative pain measured by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), cumulative ambulatory score (CAS), and the Barthel Index (MBI). Significant differences were reported in VAS pain scores at 1-day post-operation, cumulative CAS scores between 1-3 days post-operation, length of hospital stay, and MBI scores at the time of discharge, with better scores in the loaded carbohydrate group.
