Pilot study of psilocybin treatment for anxiety in patients with advanced-stage cancer

A moderate dose of psilocybin can be a safe treatment model with limited cardiovascular effects and no adverse psychological effects. The dose can potentially help reduce stress and anxiety, along with sustained improvements in mood after six months. This study is limited by the lack of an independent control group and the subjects and investigator's knowledge of the drug treatment order.

Twelve patients experiencing advanced-stage cancer and anxiety symptoms underwent a double-blind, placebo-controlled study to test the safety and effectiveness of psilocybin. In a randomized order, patients received a moderate psilocybin dose (0.2 mg/kg) and a niacin placebo dose several weeks apart with a 6 month follow up period. The outcome measures were patients' vitals (blood pressure and heart rate) and depression, mood and anxiety measures. Compared to the placebo, the psilocybin dose elicited only minor HR and BP elevations, with no increase in the number of cardiac arrhythmias. There were no adverse effects with the psilocybin dose.
