Psilocybin biases facial recognition, goal-directed behavior, and mood state toward positive relative to negative emotions through different serotonergic subreceptors

Psilocybin helps increases emotional processing biases toward positive information through different psychological domains such as mood states and facial recognition. Additionally, when paired with psilocybin, ketanserin blocked the psilocybin-induced effects of mood elevation and decreased negative facial expression recognition. This indicates the role 5-HT2A receptors have in mood states and facial expression recognition. The study is limited by the small sample size.
Study Summary
Seventeen healthy subjects underwent a double-blind, randomized trial to test the effects of psilocybin and the role of serotonin receptors on emotional processing biases in mood disorders. Subjects initially received either a placebo or a ketanserin (5-HT2A serotonin receptor antagonist) dose. Subjects were then given either a placebo or psilocybin dose one hour later. The emotional processing biases were measured through testing mood states through self-report ratings, facial emotional recognition, and goal-directed behaviour toward emotional cues. The psilocybin dose improved positive mood, reduced recognition of negative facial expressions and increased goal-directed behaviour toward positive cues.
