Randomized controlled trial of gabapentin as an adjunct to perioperative analgesia in total hip arthroplasty patients

102 patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to receive either gabapentin or a placebo preoperatively and for two days postoperatively. The purpose of this study was to determine if gabapentin was effective in reducing postoperative morphine consumption and morphine-associated adverse events. Results demonstrated no significant differences between groups in total morphine consumption over the first 72 hours postoperatively. There were also no significant differences noted in pain or the incidence of morphine-related side effects.
