BMC Anesthesiol . 2022 Aug 6;22(1):252.Sixty-four patients undergoing elective total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive either PENG block combined with local infiltration analgesia (n=32) or LIA alone (n=32). The primary outcome was oral morphine equivalent (OME) consumption at postoperative day 1. Secondary outcomes included postoperative pain scores, Timed Up and Go (TUG) test results, thigh adduction strength, and patient satisfaction. Outcomes were assessed up to two days post-surgery. Overall, the study found no statistically significant differences in OME consumption or pain scores between the groups. Motor function tests confirmed that the PENG block was motor-sparing. These findings suggest that adding a PENG block to LIA does not confer additional postoperative analgesic benefits when an adequate multimodal analgesia regimen is implemented.
