Pericapsular Nerve Group Block Leads to Small but Consistent Reductions in Pain Between 18 and 24 Hours Postoperatively in Hip Arthroscopy for Femoroacetabular Impingement Surgery: A Prospective, Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

Sixty-eight patients with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) were randomized to receive either a pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block with 20 mL of 0.375% ropivacaine (n=34) or a sham block with 20 mL of saline (n=34). The primary outcome of interest was the pain score (visual analog score, VAS) during the first 24 hours postoperatively. Secondary outcomes included opioid use, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), and achieving minimal clinically important difference (MCID) in pain reduction. Outcomes were assessed up to 24 hours. Overall, the results revealed that the PENG block group experienced significantly lower pain from the 18th to 24th hour postoperatively, and a greater percentage achieved MCID. However, there were no significant differences in opioid use or PONV between groups. These findings suggest that the PENG block provides modest pain relief in the immediate postoperative period but does not reduce opioid consumption.
