Overall, PI showed better pain outcomes 24 hours after surgery compared to the placebo group. The results of this trial were limited by the lack of double or triple blinding and limited follow-up assessments. Future trials should consider blinding all personnel, if possible, and assessing pain outcomes at more time intervals.

Forty-four patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) with a hamstring graft were randomized to receive either a periarticular injection for pain (PI; n=22) or a placebo (n=22). The primary outcomes of interest included pain on a Visual Analog Scale at 8 and 24 hours postoperation. Secondary outcomes of interest included the incidence of rescue analgesia, rescue antiemetic use, and complications. Knee pain was significantly lower in the PI group at 8 and 24 hours post-operation. All other outcomes were similar between the two groups.
