Pelvic rotation correction combined with Schroth exercises for pelvic and spinal deformities in mild adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: A randomized controlled trial.
PLoS One . 2024 Jul 30;19(7):e0307955.Forty-two adolescents with mild idiopathic scoliosis were randomized to receive Schroth exercises alone (n=21) or Schroth exercises combined with pelvic rotation correction based on proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (n=21). The primary outcome of interest was the change in hipbone widths' concave/convex ratio. Secondary outcomes included the Cobb angle, angle of trunk rotation, self-image scores, apical vertebral translation, and apical vertebral rotation. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and after 24 weeks of intervention. Overall, the results showed that the combined intervention group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in the concave/convex ratio, angle of trunk rotation, and apical vertebral rotation compared to the control group. The study suggests that pelvic rotation correction enhances the effectiveness of Schroth exercises for improving spinal and pelvic deformities in mild scoliosis
