Minor effect of patient education for alcohol cessation intervention on outcomes after acute fracture surgery: a randomized trial of 70 patients.

While there were promising results on perioperative alcohol cessation, there were no significant differences in the rate of postoperative complications or clinical outcomes between groups. Future studies should consider assessing other lifestyle interventions such as ERAS into the alcohol cessation program.

Seventy patients who are undergoing ankle fracture surgery and drink at least 21 drinks per week were randomized to either the Gold Standard Program (GSP-A) arm which consisted of a manual-based 6-week program that aimed for complete alcohol abstinence (n=35) or the control group (n=33). The primary outcome of this trial was to determine if there were any post-operative complications. The secondary outcomes assessed alcohol intake, hospital stay, costs, and quality of life at 6-week and 12-month follow-up. The results showed no significant differences in the rate of complications between the two treatment arms at 6 weeks and 12 months.
