2018 OTA Annual Meeting: Screw Removal Effects Within the Syndesmosis (ScREWS Trial)

OE Journal. 2018;6(20):2832 patients with a syndesmosis injury following ankle fracture and underwent syndesmotic screw fixation were randomized to either screw removal or screw retention after 3 months. Patients were assessed for functional outcome on the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) after 1 year. Only 16 patients were available for analysis, but results demonstrated no significant difference in FAOS score at 1 year between groups. Almost half of the screws that had been retained beyond 3 months (4/9) were either broken or loose at 12-month follow-up.
