OTA2018: Forgoing early x-rays after DRF reduces cost, offers similar outcome to routine radiography .

Is Routine Radiography in the Follow-up of Trauma Patients With Distal Radius Fractures (Cost) Effective?

326 patients with a distal radius fracture were randomized to either a reduced imaging protocol, with radiographs obtained at 6 at 12 weeks if clinically indicated, or to a routine radiography protocol, with radiographs obtained at 1, 2, 6, and 12 weeks. Patients were assessed for wrist-related function, complication rate, and costs. Results demonstrated no significant differences between groups in either the Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation, the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire, or the incidence of complications. Costs associated with radiography were significantly lower in the reduced imaging group.
