OTA 2023: External Beam Radiation for Heterotopic Ossification Prophylaxis After Acetabular Surgery .
The Effect of External Beam Radiation Therapy as Heterotropic Ossification Prophylaxis After Acetabular Surgery: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial
79 patients undergoing an acetabular fracture surgery were randomized to receive external radiation therapy (n=41) or no treatment (n=38). The primary outcome of interest was the incidence of severe heterotopic ossification (Brooker class III-IV). While the intent-to-treat analysis did not find any significant differences between groups, when analyzing patients who received treatment (per-protocol analysis), the odds of severe heterotopic ossification was significantly lower in the external radiation therapy group (p=0.04).
