Optimal Timing of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in Patients With Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tear: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Eleven randomized controlled trials with a total of 972 patients were included in this meta-analysis comparing early and delayed anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The primary outcomes of interest were functional outcomes and the risk of complications. Additional outcomes included operative time. The results of this study found no differences in pooled operative time, range of motion, knee stability, Tegner score, or retear and infection between the two groups. Lysholm scores at 1 & 2 years and IKDC scores at 6 months, however, were significantly in favour of the early reconstruction group, but were limited to 1-2 studies per timepoint in the pooled analyses. The results of this study suggest no significant influence of the timing of surgery on patient outcomes.
