A New Dressing System Reduces the Number of Dressing Changes in the Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Ninety-eight patients undergoing primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty for knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either a novel calcium alginate dressing (n=49) or a traditional gauze dressing (n=49). The primary outcomes of this trial were to assess clinical outcomes such as number of dressing changes, satisfaction, pain and functional recovery scores, wound scores, and wound-related complications, as well as dressing-related costs. The results of this trial showed significant reductions in dressing changes and post-operative hospital stay and improvements in patient satisfaction and scar assessment in the intervention group when compared to the traditional dressing group.
