Is Delayed Weightbearing After Matrix-Associated Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation in the Knee Associated With Better Outcomes? A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

Seven randomized controlled trials were included in this systematic review which compared outcomes after matrix-associated autologous chondrocyte implantation (MACI) between groups of patients allocated to weight-bearing by 6 weeks, groups of patients allocated to weight-bearing by 8 weeks, and groups of patients allocated to weight-bearing by 10-11 weeks. Qualitatively, similar changes in pain and functional measures were observed among protocols, and studies demonstrated significant improvement in these measures from preoperatively to final follow-up. There were no differences in failure rate between groups.
