Comparison of Ultrasound-Guided Versus Landmark-Based Corticosteroid Injection for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Prospective Randomized Trial

102 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome were randomized to receive either an ultrasound-guided or landmark-based corticosteroid injection. Outcomes of interest included the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ) Symptom and Function scores, grip strength, rate of surgical treatment following injection, and adverse events. Follow up was performed at 4, 12 and 24 weeks. The results of the study revealed a favourable BCTQ symptom score at 4 weeks in the ultrasound-guided group compared to the landmark-based group. Furthermore, a higher proportion of patients in the landmark-based group displayed adverse events compared to the ultrasound-guided group. Otherwise, there were no significant differences in all outcomes between the two groups, at all time points.
