Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Use after Total Knee Arthroplasty Improves Early Return to Function: A Randomized Trial.

Sixty-six patients undergoing unilateral TKA were randomized to receive postoperative neuromuscular stimulation (NMES) in addition to standard physiotherapy (n=44) or physiotherapy alone (n=22). Outcomes of interest were quadriceps strength, range of motion, function and patient reported outcomes. Patients who were compliant with the NMES demonstrated significantly greater quadriceps gains at 6 weeks postoperatively. The NMES group also demonstrated significantly better timed up and go test scores at 6 and 12 weeks postoperatively. No differences in pain, range of motion or patient reported outcomes were noted.
