Negative Pressure Wound Therapy versus Conventional Dressing in Lower Limb Fractures: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open. 2024 01-May;():. 10.1097/GOX.0000000000005806Nine studies including 535 patients with Gustilo type 3 lower limb fractures were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) to conventional wound dressing (CWD). Pooled outcomes of interest included overall infection, superficial infection, deep infection, nonunion, and flap failure rates. Results indicated significantly lower rates of overall infection, superficial infection, deep infection, and nonunion with NPWT compared to CWD. Flap failure rates were similar across groups. The findings suggest that NPWT is an effective wound management strategy for reducing infections and nonunion in these complex injuries.
