Platelet-rich plasma, supervised exercise or both for pain relief and enhanced function in knee .

Does the Combination of Platelet-rich Plasma and Supervised Exercise Yield Better Pain Relief and Enhanced Function in Knee Osteoarthritis? A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2024 01-Jun;():. 10.1097/CORR.0000000000002993

Eighty-four patients with mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis were randomized into three groups: supervised exercise (n=28), PRP injections (n=28), or combined PRP and exercise (n=28). The primary outcome was knee pain at 24 weeks, measured on a numeric pain scale. Secondary outcomes included WOMAC scores, 40-meter fast-paced walk test, stair climbing test, and SF-12 health-related quality of life scores. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks. Overall, the results showed that exercise alone was clinically superior to PRP alone in functional and quality of life metrics, and the addition of PRP to exercise did not provide additional benefits. The study concluded that exercise alone is the recommended treatment for managing mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis.
