Music therapy and Benson relaxation in postoperative care: A randomized controlled trial on pain and kinesiophobia after lumbar discectomy.

150 patients undergoing open lumbar discectomy for lumbar disc herniation were randomized to receive music therapy (MT) plus standard care, Benson Relaxation Method (BRM) plus standard care, or standard postoperative care alone. The primary outcomes of interest were postoperative pain intensity measured by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and kinesiophobia measured using the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, postoperative day 1, postoperative day 2, and postoperative day 3. Overall, the results of the study revealed significant reductions in pain intensity and kinesiophobia in both intervention groups compared with standard care alone. MT produced faster pain relief and greater reductions in kinesiophobia by postoperative day 3, whereas BRM demonstrated earlier improvement in fear of movement by postoperative day 2. The findings suggest that both MT and BRM are effective non-pharmacological treatments for improving early postoperative recovery after lumbar discectomy.
