Application of a preoperative pain management mode based on instant messaging software in elderly hip fracture patients: a randomized controlled trial.

Ninety patients over the age of 65 undergoing unilateral hip fractures were randomized to either the pain management mode through an instant messaging software (n=46) or control (n=44). Outcomes of interest included time to first fascia iliaca compartmental block (FICB), the incidence of FICB, pain intensity on a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), analgesic satisfaction score, and incidence of delirium, 7 days postoperatively. Maximum NRS, duration of the maximum NRS, duration of NRS > 3, and analgesic satisfaction scores were all significantly better in the intervention group. Time to first FICB completion was also significantly better in the intervention group but the incidence of FICB was similar between the two groups. Additionally, the incidence of postoperative delirium was similar between groups.
