Two-Year Outcomes of a Randomized Trial Investigating a 6-Week Return to Full Weightbearing After Matrix-Induced Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation
Am J Sports Med. 2017 Mar;45(4):838-84835 patients scheduled for matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation were randomized to either an accelerated or delayed weight-bearing postoperative rehabilitation protocol. Groups were compared for clinical outcome measures, radiological outcomes, and the incidence of complications. Results demonstrated no significant differences between groups in any clinical outcome measures, including the KOOS, SF-36, VAS pain, knee ROM, and knee strength in extension and flexion. Results on the MOCART MRI scoring system demonstrated a significant difference between groups in favour of the accelerated weight-bearing group for the parameters related to border integration and surface contour, though the remaining parameters demonstrated no significant difference between groups.
