Motion Versus Fixed Distraction of the Joint in the Treatment of Ankle Osteoarthritis
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2012 Jun 6;94(11):961-7036 patients with advanced ankle osteoarthritis who received anterior osteophyte removal were randomized to either fixed ankle distraction or ankle distraction with joint motion. The results from two year follow-up indicated that both groups displayed significant improvements in the ankle osteoarthritis scale (AOS). However, patients who received motion distraction had significantly better AOS scores 26, 52 and 104 week follow-up. In addition, these patients also had a significantly greater mean improvement in this score at 104 week follow-up.
