Hydroxyapatite-Coated Tibial Implants Compared with Cemented Tibial Fixation in Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Trial of Outcomes at Five Years
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2007 Oct;89(10):2204-1181 patients were randomized to undergo one of two procedures for the treatment of primary total knee arthroplasty. One group received cementless tibial fixation with hydroxyapatite-coated tibial implants while the second group received a cemented tibial fixation. Results were examined 5 years postoperatively with the primary outcomes of self-reported pain and function. Results showed comparable primary and secondary outcomes between the two groups at the 5-year follow-up. However, the cementless (hydroxyapatite) group reported more pain within the first 6 months.
