Mood and cognition after administration of low LSD doses in healthy volunteers: A placebo controlled dose-effect finding study

Low doses of LSD can induce selective, beneficial effects on mood and cognition. At the minimal dose (5 mcg), beneficial effects such as increased friendliness, arousal, and decreased attentional lapses were observed. More apparent effects were observed at 20 mcg, such as increased positive mood, friendliness and increased attentional focus. Negative effects such as anxiety and confusion were also observed. The results are limited by the small sample size.

Twenty-four healthy subjects underwent a double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subject study to test the minimal dose of LSD needed to affect mood and cognition. Subjects received 5, 10 or 20 mcg of LSD and measures of cognition, mood and subjective experience were taken up until 6 hours after administration. LSD induced positive effects such as increasing positive mood (20 mcg), friendliness (5, 20 mcg), arousal (5 mcg), and decreasing attentional lapses (5, 20 mcg). LSD induced negative effects such as an increase in confusion (20 mcg) and anxiety (10, 20 mcg). The minimal LSD dose where subjective and performance effects were apparent was 5 mcg.
