Mobile-type platform better than fixed-type platform for functional outcomes in TKA .
Relationship between joint gap difference and range of motion in total knee arthroplasty: A prospective randomised study between different platforms
Int Orthop. 2009 Aug;33(4):997-1000. Epub 2009 Apr 28.68 patients (76 joints) undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomized to receive arthroplasty with either a mobile platform or fixed platform. This study assessed the effects of platform type on the postoperative range of motion (ROM), while also assessing correlation of postoperative ROM with preoperative ROM and knee joint gap. The results from this study indicated that at a 4 year follow-up both platforms improved knee extension ROM compared to preoperative measures. Additionally, the mobile platform demonstrated a significantly larger increase in ROM compared to the fixed platform.
