Minimal early functional gains after operative treatment of midshaft clavicular fractures: a meta-analysis of 10 randomized controlled trials including 1333 patients.

This meta-analysis included 10 randomized controlled trials with 1,333 patients suffering from displaced midshaft clavicular fractures. The study compared operative treatment using plate osteosynthesis against nonoperative treatment. Pooled outcomes of interest included shoulder function, as measured by the Constant Score and DASH (Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand) score, as well as time to return to work and sick leave duration. The analysis revealed a modest improvement in function at six weeks for operative treatment, in favor of surgery. However, this difference decreased over time and was not clinically significant at 3 and 6 months. The findings suggest that while operative treatment offers early functional benefits, the long-term advantages are minimal.
