Lumbar Erector Spinae Plane Block for Total Hip Arthroplasty Comparing 24-Hour Opioid Requirements: A Randomized Controlled Study

Sixty-three patients undergoing an elective total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive a lumbar erector spinae plane block (n=32) or control (no block; n=31). The outcomes of interest included cumulative opioid consumption, post-operative pain scores on a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), and the incidence of adverse events. The results revealed significantly lower opioid consumption in the first 8 hours post-operation in the block group vs. the control group (p=0.013). No other differences were observed in opioid consumption, post-operative pain scores, or adverse events.
