LSD Acutely Impairs Fear Recognition and Enhances Emotional Empathy and Sociality

LSD impaired recognition of negative emotions and enhanced emotional empathy for positive emotional situations while also having subjective and behaviourally tested prosocial effects. These findings are similar to research on MDMA's effects on emotion processing. LSD was well-tolerated with only minor, short-term adverse effects of dizziness, headache and fatigue. These findings have implications for LSD-assisted psychotherapy in patients. The results are limited by the lack of a within-subject design.

Forty healthy subjects underwent a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover study to test the acute effects of LSD on emotional processing. Subjects were divided into two groups where they received either 100 or 200 micrograms LSD and then completed the Face Emotion Recognition Task (FERT) and the Multifaceted Empathy Test (MET). LSD impaired the recognition of sad and fearful faces, produced feelings of happiness, trust, closeness to others, and enhanced explicit and implicit emotional empathy. LSD increased prosocial behaviour.
