Total Intravenous Anesthesia with Propofol Reduces Discharge Times Compared with Inhaled General Anesthesia in Shoulder Arthroscopy: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

96 patients scheduled for primary shoulder arthroscopy were randomized to receive total intravenous anesthesia with propofol (TIVA-P) (n=48) or inhaled general anesthesia (n=48). The primary outcome of interest was PACU-1 time (Aldrete score >=9). Secondary outcomes of interest included Surgical time, PACU-2 time, total time til discharge, pre and post-operative pain, use of postoperative antiemetics, use of perioperative interventions, and satisfaction ratings from the anesthesiologist, surgeon, and patient. Outcomes were assessed up to the patient's postoperative office visit. The TIVA-P group spent significantly less in time in PACU-1 and were discharged significantly faster compared to the IGA group. The TIVA-P group had a significantly lower rate of antiemetic use than the IGA group.
